NOTES: The genus Massarina has been shown to be polyphyletic and many species educed to synonymy by Hyde & Aptroot (1998). Massarina thalassiae was described by Kohlmeyer & Volkmann-Kohlmeyer (1987) from driftwood collected on Aldabra and Galapagos. However, M. thalassiae in a multigene analysis did not group with Massarina eburnea and was therefore transferred to a new genus Halomassarina in the family Trematosphaeriaceae (Suetrong et al. 2009). The family Trematosphaeriaceae was validated by Suetrong et al. (2011). Halomassarina thalassiae is widely collected on a variety of intertidal mangrove timbers with many records from India (Borse et al. 2012).
