Type species:

Moromyces varius (Chatmala & Somrith.) Abdel-Wahab, K.L. Pang, Nagah., Abdel-Aziz & E.B.G. Jones

≡ Cumulospora varia Chatmala & Somrith. Fungal Diversity 17: 3 (2004)

Asexual morph, saprobic hyphae septate, branched, superficial or immersed, pale brown. Conidiophores absent. Conidiogenous cells holoblastic, integrated, terminal, determinate. Conidia 24-87 × 21-51 μm, dark grey to fuscous, solitary, scattered or gregarious, muriform. Conidia initially spiral, but cell division in several planes, leads to a tangled knot of cells that may number 40 or more and up to 20 μm diam. or more of each individual cell. Sexual morph: Undetermined (Description based on Chatmala et al. (2004)).

NOTES: Moromyces varius is distinguished from Cumulospora marina by its muriform, irregularly helicoids conidia, with conidial cells that are more or less similar in shape and size. Conidia in C. marina are rosette-like in shape with globose conidial cells. Moromyces varius forms a sister group to Lulwoana uniseptata and its asexual morph Zalerion maritima (Jones et al. 2008), but the clade that contains the three taxons has received weak bootstrap support. Morphologically the conidia are initially coiled but cell division in many planes leads to a tangled knot of cells, thus differing from Z. maritima whose conidia are distinctly coiled (Abdel-Wahab et al. 2010). Sequence data placed Cumulospora varia in the Lulworthiaceae (Abdel-Wahab et al. 2010) with the introduction of a new genus Moromyces to accommodate it as it did not group with the type species Cumulospora marina. The genus is accepted as a member of the Luloworthiaceae (Luloworthiales) in the subclass Lulworthiomycetidae by Jones et al. (2015) and Maharachchikumbura et al. (2015).
