NOTES: Hydea pygmea is a common species on mangrove wood, especially Rhizophora species, growing on the bark, with slow growth in culture but sporulating readily. The fungus differs from all other Cirrenalia-like species by the dark-brown to black hooked nature of the conidia. Hydea pygmea is characterized by internal proliferation of the conidia (Kohlmeyer & Kohlmeyer 1979). Sequence data placed Cirrenalia pymea in the Lulworthiaceae (Abdel-Wahab et al. 2010) with the introduction of a new genus Hydea to accommodate it as it did not belong in the Cirrenalia clade. The genus is accepted as a member of the Luloworthiaceae (Luloworthiales) in the subclass Lulworthiomycetidae by Jones et al. (2015) and Maharachchikumbura et al. (2015).
